The Pittsburgh Steelers have cleared $5 million in cap space by restructuring inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons’ contract. The Steelers are also close to finalizing a restructuring of Ben Roethlisberger’s contract. He was scheduled to make $11.6 million in 2013, but the new deal will save the Steelers several million next season. Prior to the Roethlisberger and Timmons restructurings, Pittsburgh was going to be several million dollars under the salary cap, but will now be above it just enough to re-sign key restricted free agents like Emmanuel Sanders, and sign bargain free agents like Steve Breaston.
Speaking of Breaston, the free agent receiver will meet with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday and the Steelers on Friday. It’s believed that the Steelers are the favorites to land him, with the Browns having an outside chance of stealing him away.
