While the deadline to apply the NFL franchise tag ends today at 4:00 PM EST, some teams are working frantically to free up cap space so that they are able to utilize the tag. Dallas Cowboys starting safety Gerald Sensabaugh was released today according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport. Sensabaug is currently ranked as the tenth-best free agent safety by Walter Football, Sensabaugh has also tweeted news of his release himself:
Been informed I’m being released for cap purposes…had a great run #CowboyNation I appreciate the organization and my teammates

It’s unclear as to whether this means Dallas will use some of the $1.4 million saved in his release to use the franchise tag. If the Cowboys decide to place the franchise tag on linebacker Anthony Spencer for the second straight year, it would be an immediate $10.63 million charge to the 2013 salary cap. Last year, it was $8.8 million and the Cowboys decided to let Spencer play the entire year on that one-year tender.
