The Cincinnati Bengals officially announced they’ve re-signed backup offensive tackle Dennis Roland. Roland has pent his entire NFL career as a backup who occasionally comes in as a third tight end in heavy run formations.
His only string of starts came in 2009 when Smith was hurt with a foot injury. Roland played in every game that year with 12 starts (nine at RT; three at TE), and also started Wild Card playoff loss to the New York Jets.
With his 6’9″, 322-pound frame, he can dominate defenders and push them far behind the line of scrimmage, but he has been average at-best in pass protection, and hopefully he’s kept on the bench as the team works to re-sign Andre Smith, whom Mike Brown said the team was still working very hard to re-sign.
In an interview with the Cincinnati Enquirer, Brown said the Bengals were trying to work with Smith’s people and “they know that we want to make a deal and we want them to engage and get it done.”
