Coming into today, the best offensive tackles on the open market were Bengals tackle Andre Smith and the New England Patriots’ Sebastian Vollmer. You can scratch Vollmer off that list now:
Filed to ESPN Boston: the Patriots and free agent OT Sebastian Vollmer have reached an agreement on a new contract.
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) March 24, 2013
Vollmer has started 44 of 51 regular season games and all five game postseason games he’s been active for the Patriots. Vollmer was limited to just seven regular and postseason games in the 2011 regular season by a back injury, but did start 15 regular season games and both of New England’s playoff games in 2012.
With his signing, Andre Smith will look at his deal and use it in his negotiating with the Bengals for a long-term deal, in which he is asking for around $9 million per year.
Expect to see significant movement in his contract talks with the Bengals, and a deal to be reached before the end of March.
