Cincinnati Bengals NFL Draft Plans: The Curious Case for a Tight-End

Should Bengals fans be noticing the recent travels of one John Hayes, Bengals TE coach? He seems to be checking into many of the upcoming drafts TE’s. Hayes has been seen at Stanford, Notre Dame, San Diego State, and Michigan State’s pro days. These are soon to be past homes of TE’s Zach Ertz, Levine Toilolo, Tyler Eifert, Gavin Escobar, and Dion Sims. This and the recent comments by Bengals Radio Network analyst Dave Lapham about the possible selection of a tight-end with the Bengals first pick, many Bengals fans are wondering why the team would use a first-round pick on a position that doesn’t seem to be a need.

Currently the Bengals have two-time “Pro-Bowler” Jermaine Gresham on the roster and 2012 4th-round draft pick Orson Charles. The team also re-signed Richard Quinn, a blocking tight-end who didn’t play in a single game last season. Where does a 4th tight end fit into the picture? Is there something that we don’t know about? Are the Bengals looking to move on from Jermaine Gresham whose madding inconsistency at times was heart breaking. Or, as Jay Gruden informed us, are the Bengals just looking for any way to provide more playmakers/offensive production? In a few weeks we will have some answers as the draft approaches and provides hope to all 32 NFL teams.
