It wasn’t long ago that a talented runningback was leading the Boise State offense while looking  like a first-round talent. You might guess that was Doug Martin, who just finished up an outstanding rookie season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But in fact, Martin was sitting on the bench while D.J. Harper was getting all of the carries for the Broncos’ offense. That is, until two devastating ACL injuries cost him much of his collegiate career. Harper just finished his sixth year of eligibility after a prolonged career, and now he’ll look to take the NFL by storm in the same manner his former teammate did this past season.

But unlike Martin, Harper will have to do it after being a Day 3 selection, or even going undrafted.

Strengths

Very elusive. Utilizes spin move very well.

Decisive ball-carrier. Doesn’t dance in the backfield.

Hits the hole with good burst, but also patiently lets his blocks develop.

Good hands and runs good routes.

Will lay-out and make difficult catches RBs rarely make.

Weaknesses

Runs high and bounce outside more than you’d like.

Injury concerns.

Lacks size and durability to be a 3-down back in NFL.

Didn’t show he could be consistent pass-catching back.

Current Projection: 5th-6th round
