Marvin Lewis said Tuesday that he believes a deal with Smith could be nearing as the draft is vastly approaching:
The sun is emerging, maybe. I’m hopeful we can get a solution prior to (Thursday’s) draft. I know Andre would like to get it done. I think he’d feel better about things so he doesn’t get lost without a chair.
Lewis went on to say he feels good about adding a lineman from this year’s draft, even if smith re-signs:
Offensive line-wise, we’ve got an opportunity to add younger guys. We’ve had good success with these guys we’ve taken and we’ve got to be able to keep that going.
Looking at some potential late-round lineman the Bengals have looked at, Reid Fragel of Ohio State is the likeliest candidate after the Bengals worked him out on Monday. The earliest he’ll be taken would be pick #84 in the third-round, but they can probably wait until the fourth-round at #118, as most projections have him going between the 4th-5th round.
Some other names to watch for are David Bakhtiari (OT, Colorado), Terron Armstead (OT, Arkansas Pine-Bluff), Dallas Thomas (OT/OG, Tennessee), Chris Faulk (OT, LSU), and Kyle Long (OT/OG Oregon). All of theses players will likely be available in the third-round and possibly later.
