The New York Jets have finally released backup QB Tim Tebow after just one season. The Jets drafted West Virginia QB Geno Smith this weekend, making Tebow expendable. Tebow will now be subject to waivers, but with $3.48 million on his contract, he won’t be claimed.
Tebow is now just 15 months removed from leading the Denver Broncos to their epic Wild Card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, which ironically is that Denver playoff victory in te past 7 seasons.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan:
We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason (losing weight). We wish him the best moving forward.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport has reported the Jets plan to bring starting QB Mark Sanchez to OTAs and let him compete with Smith for the starting job. Sanchez and Smith will battle all training camp-long and likely the preseason before a starting QB is named.
