After being franchised tagged this offseason, Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson was denied a long-term contract and the security that comes with it. After he couldn’t agree to an extension with the Bengals, they gave it to his running mate, Carlos Dunlap.

Thankfully, they’re good friends and teammates, and Johnson is happy for Dunlap:

“I knew they wanted to get something done with me, him and Geno. It just didn’t work out with me,” Johnson said. “It is what it is. It’s not going to be a distraction or anything. We’re still going to go out and ball, and when it’s time to take another look at that next year, then we’ll do it.”
Said Johnson of Dunlap’s extension: “He’s done a lot of good things for us since he’s been here. He works hard. He deserves it.”

Johnson will now have to risk injury or a drop in performance as he has to wait until the offseason to get a long-term deal.
