The Cincinnati Bengals opened the preseason with a dominating win over the Atlanta Falcons, 34-10. The starting offense was less-than-stellar, as quarterback Andy Dalton was just 3/7 for 37 yards. I t wasn’t all on Dalton though, as he was missing three of his top four receivers, including the All-Pro A.J. Green.
The offense didn’t start to click until Josh Johnson came in, and proceed to run and throw all over the Atlanta defense. He started things off with a 43-yard run after the pocket broke down. Later, he hit Brandon Tate for a 21-yard TD and the Bengals go on top 10-3. He then led the Bengals on a 2-minute scoring drive to end the half and build the lead to 17-3, a lead they would never relinquish.
Cincinnati highly-touted rookies had forgettable debuts. Tight end Tyler Eifert didn’t record a catch. Running back Giovani Bernard had just 10 carries for 28 yards (2.8 ypc), but did have a rushing TD.
Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher had a breakout night, highlighted by a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown in the 3rd-quarter. He also had a 36-yard receiving TD.
