Bengals comeback falls short as Dallas prevails with 24-18 win

Aug 24, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray (29) runs with the ball in the third quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals at AT

The Cincinnati Bengals typically haven’t had much success in dress rehearsal games, as they’re just 2-8 in Preseason Game No. 3 in the tenure of Marvin Lewis. That trend held true tonight, as the Bengals dropped their first preseason game, 21-18 to the Dallas Cowboys. At 2-1 this preseason, the Bengals will return to Cincinnati next week to host the Indianapolis Colts in the finale before heading to Chicago to face the Bears in the regular-season opener.

After a sloppy first-half that left the Bengals trailing 14-7 at halftime, the majority of the first team offense came out and drove right down the field on the strength of their newfound running game behind rookie Giovani Bernard. After a first-half that saw BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani have a combined 14 yards rushing on eight carries, the Bengals focused on running the ball with Bernard, who got two-straight carries for 24 yards.

After a 26-yd catch by Green put the Bengals at the DAL-16, the offense stalled, and Quinn Sharp booted in a chippy cut the deficit to 14-10. From there on out, the backups finished the game.

DeMarco Murray would carry the Cowboys’ offense the rest of the way, rushing 12 times for 51 yards and caught a 7-yard TD pass from Kyle Orton, and put Dallas up 21-10. Josh Johnson came in and got the only backup QB snaps of the night, and directed a 14-play, 60-yard drive in 5:34 to get the Bengals within 3 points at 21-18, but after a late Dallas drive ate-up much of the clock, Johnson would get the ball back one last time with Cincinnati trailing 24-18 and under a minute left.

But an interception would end the comeback attempt, and the Bengals are now 2-1 this preseason.
