PFT has learned via a league source that tackleDennis Roland and running back Daniel Herron have both been released. Roland played in all 64 games in the last four seasons for the Bengals, starting 29 times although most of those starts came in 2009 and 2010.
Herron was a sixth-round pick last season, but saw action in just three games and got four carries as a rookie. The Bengals drafted Giovani Bernard and Rex Burkheadin the 2013 draft to go with BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Bernard Scott and Cedric Peerman, which was too much for Herron to overcome even with Scott still on his way back from a torn ACL.
It appears as though the Bengals are opting to try and sneak Herron onto the practice squad, and keep Rex Burkhead on the 53-man. Herron did lead the team in rushing during the preseason, but there’s still a good chance he’ll make it through waivers.
The former Nebraska Cornhuskers bruiser Burkhead accumulate over 3,300 yards on 635 carries, and was drafted in the sixth-round this year.
Roland had spent five seasons with the Bengals and played in every regular season game dating back to 2009, most of which were as a swing-tackle and as a blocking tight end in heavy formations.
