Razor-thin Linebacker Depth

You know you’re in dire straights when Taylor Mays is having to get significant snaps for your team. Now, imagine Mays getting significant snaps at a position he’s never played….

Mays spent last weekend at the Bengals complex learning linebacking assignments, as the team appears to be prepping him for an emergency LB role in the event one of the Bengals’ lone healthy LBs goes down this week.

“It’s the same thing as when a safety inserts into the box. Some of the run gap fits are a little different,” Mays said. “I’ve been picking it up quick.”

The Bengals can’t afford any injuries to their starting trio of James Harrison, Vontaze Burfict and Rey Maualuga, and with longtime special-teamer Vincent Rey and undrafted free agent Jayson DiManche the next two in line for snaps, this is a very scary situation for a team hoping to make Super Bowl run.
