TE – Jermaine Gresham
Gresham is entering the last year of his rookie contract and has seen the team draft another 1st round tight end. In my eyes Jermaine Gresham is the same guy the Bengals drafted 4 years ago, a so-so blocker who isn’t as tough as his 6’6 260 frame would suggest.
In his fourth season Gresham continued to have mental lapses committing 11 penalties, second most on the team despite playing 79% of the snaps. He also lost 3 of his 46 receptions to fumbles, another trend that has plagued the tight end since he entered the league.
Whether it’s been usage or play calling less the half of the tight ends catches went for first downs. In comparison Brent Celek saw 69% of his 32 catches go for first downs and Jared Cook had 67% of his catches go for first downs.
To pile on, Gresham ranks at the bottom of the league in first down catch percentages for tight ends and leads the league in penalties by a tight tend for the third straight year. If ever there was a time for a fresh start, trading the guy for maybe a 3rd/4th might not be a bad Idea, hello Atlanta do you need a tight end to replace Tony Gonzalez?
