Smith has played in 26 games over the last two seasons for the Browns. He’s caught 27 passes for 178 yards over that span. He played in more of an H-back type role for the Browns as he lined up on the line of scrimmage and in the backfield. He’s played for 8 seasons after entering the league in 2005 as a third-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Also, this tidbit came from Geoff Hobson last week as the Bengals looked to be on the verge of signing Smith:

If Smith signs, he’d probably be #Bengals No. 2 TE. In 9th year, he’s been with 3 teams and broke in with Jay Gruden in Tampa Bay

Hobson also offered up a brief update on free agent linebacker James Harrison:

Heavy lifting doesn’t appear to have begun yet as #Bengals talk with James Harrison. But both sides seem interested.

That means there likely won’t be any deal reached before the draft.

As you have may have hear earlier the San Francisco 49ers have agreed in principal to a deal that will send quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for several draft picks. What you may have not realized is that this deal could be significant to the Cincinnati Bengals.

As of now, the two best free agent offensive lineman are the Bengals Andre Smith, and the Chiefs’ Branden Albert.

Albert is five-year veteran who Pro Football Focus ranks as the fourth-best offensive tackle available in free agency. He transitioned to left tackle from guard as a college player and has become one of the NFL’s best pass protectors. It’s conceivable to see him playing right tackle or even moving back to guard for whatever team decides to sign him, making his value even higher.
