Day Two of the Bengals’ mandatory minicamp is over with. Here’s what we learned.

We already know that Andre Smith was not in attendance, and will face fines. He’s expected to return from “personal issues” later this week, and early next week at the latest.

Head coach Marvin Lewis made a point to state his approval of James Harrison’s progress as well, stating, “James has done great. It’s been fun. It’s what I expected.”

Harrison is in the process of learning a new defense, as he makes the switch from a 3-4 scheme that was run in Pittsburgh. The coaching staff, though, has held to it’s original confidence in Harrison, and his steady work ethic has seemed to help him thus far.

Adam “Pacman” Jones was present today, following his arrest on accusation of hitting a 36-year old woman at outside of a bar. His practice was limited, as he is still dealing with a sore calf muscle that he pulled on the first day pf OTAs.

The offense looked a little off track as it ran it’s session. Andy Dalton and Josh Johnson each fumbled the football in exchanges, and the practice also saw rare drops from Tyler Eifert and Mohamed Sanu.

However, Sanu made up for it with a highlight catch in traffic, and Dalton hit A.J. Green on a pretty 50-yard fade route at the start of practice.

After missing the entire voluntary portion of the Bengals offseason training program, it appears as though offensive tackle Andre Smith will not be here for the team’s mandatory minicam, according to the team’s official web site.

Update: During head coach Marvin Lewis’ press conference, he stated:

“We’d hope he’d be here to pick up on some of the things that we felt like were good to work on this point of the year. But he’s got some personal things he’s dealing with. Obviously, there are certain things that come with not being here for three days. It’s unfortunate for him but that’s just the way it is. Once we get through a week of training camp, everything will be good.”

The only other information Lewis gave on this “minor distraction” was that it was not related to his January arrest for possessing a gun in an Atlanta airport.

Unfortunately for Smith, that “minor distraction” could cost him up to $66,150, as well as his $100,000 workout bonus.

As for the rest of the Bengals’ mandatory minicamp, Smith’s backup, Anthony Collins, will fill in at RT.

This is concerning to say the least, as Smith hasn’t been to any of the team’s offseason workouts, and isn’t giving any updates other than it’s for a personal issue.

The Bengals reached a three-year agreement worth $18 million with Smith this offseason, but haven’t been able to get him to show up to any team-related activities thus far.

The former 6th-overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft has battled through two major foot injuries that cost him most of his first two seasons in the NFL, but he’s put together back-to-back seasons in which he was among the best tackles in the league.

Smith finished the 2012 season with a +26.9 grade by Pro Football Focus, the 4th-best by an offensive tackle, and the best by a right tackle.

After he missed all of OTAs, Marvin Lewis said he expected RT Andre Smith to attend the mandatory mini-camps starting today.

As you may have guessed by the title, he’s not there.

The Cincinnati Bengals shared the fact on twitter this morning, saying:

“Andre Smith is not at today’s mandatory mini-camp after missing all of OTAs. Coach Lewis to address more at press conf.”

Smith was recently signed to a 3-year, $18 million deal, following an impressive showing in his contract year.

That’s a lot of money. Whether Smith’s reasoning for not being there today is sufficient or not, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Stay updated at Stripe Hype for details from Marvin Lewis’ press conference.
