As the draft gets closer and more free agents find homes, teams will be looking at positions still left unfilled. Some players in the upcoming NFL draft could be looked at to fill or act as backup for multiple spots.

We know that the Bengals, in particular, enjoy a center who can play guard, or a defensive end who can rush the passer from the defensive tackle spot. The Bengals also keep an eye out for line backers who can play multiple spots and the interchangeable safety/corner.

Here is list of players whose versatility is sure to offer a substantial amount of intrigue and which players could be possible targets for the Bengals.

Dec 29, 2012; Bronx, NY, USA; West Virginia Mountaineers wide receiver Tavon Austin (1) runs with the ball during the second quarter against the Syracuse Orange at the 2012 New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.

Tavon Austin – WR/KR/RB, The only skill positions Tavon hasn’t played are TE and QB. He should turn out to be what Dexter McCluster was hyped to be. Bengals Target.

Xavier Rhodes – CB/S, Rhodes may start at corner, but many teams are talking about his ability and obvious fit for a safety position. Bengals Target

Dion Jordan – LB/DE/DB, A Swiss Army knife, Jordan will be picked high and for a reason. He seems to be a possible answer to the read option QB’s and athletic TE’s.

Barrett Jones – G/C/RT, Jones has been overlooked by some, but his versatility along the line should get his name called on the second day. I don’t think LT is in his future but Jones should be a 10 year player. Bengals target.

One of the top linebacker prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft is Kansas State’s Arthur Brown. He was the starting middle linebacker for one of the best defenses in college football over the past two seasons, and many regard him as one of the top 2-3 MLB prospect int this year’s draft, even though he could easily transition to the weakside or strongside. He’s got a busy weak ahead of him, with an eventual visit to the Bengals on the docket:

#KansasSt All-Big 12 LB Arthur Brown spent yesterday visiting #Bears. Today, he’ll visit #Rams. Then #Jaguars, then #Bengals on Wed & Thurs

After transferring from Miami to K-State, Brown exploded onto the college scene in 2011, as he registered 101 tackles, 2 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss and one interception on the way to being named the Big 12′s Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2011.

During his senior campaign, Brown recorded 100 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and two interceptions while being named the 2012 Big 12′s Defensive Player of the Year.

Brown is also older brother of Philadelphia Eagles running back Bryce Brown

In the latest CBS Sports mock draft, Rob Rang had the Bengals selecting Georgia middle linebacker Alec Ogletree, while Dan Brugler had them going with a surprise pick in UCLA definitive end Datone Jones:

Cincinnati ranks near the top of the NFL in sacks, but most of that production is coming from inside (Geno Atkins) and Michael Johnson, who is set for free agency. Jones was underutilized at UCLA, lining up mostly at zero and five technique in the Bruins’ three-man front, but could be a dangerous edge rusher.

Jones has been projected as a second-rounder up to this point, but has seen his stock rise as much as any prospect with a solid Senior Bowl week, and a good showing at the scouting combine could firmly plant him in the first-round.

Patrick Allen of Arrowhead Addict made an interesting case for the Kansas City Chiefs being poised to select Geno Smith with the #1 overall-selection based on their recent free agent activity:

It all seems to fit. KC can cut Albert and Dorsey while re-signing Bowe and Albert. The team also nabs Chris Canty and drafts another DE later in 2013 in a draft that is very deep in defensive and offensive lineman. The team then selects QB Geno Smith with the #1 overall pick and rolls into camp with Smith and Foles competing for the #1 QB job. If Smith isn’t ready at first, Foles knows the system and could do an adequate job while Geno learns.
