After winning a second-straight AFC West crown and having the home-field advantage in the AFC in 2012, this year will be Super Bowl-or-bust for the Denver Broncos, who return the majority of last year’s squad that won 13 games, the most since 2005. After scoring 35 points and losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round, it’s easy to say that upgrading the defense should be the #1 priotirty with their first pick.

In the never-ending college football coaching carousel, the Tennessee Volunteers have hired Cincinnati’s Butch Jones as its next football coach. Jones, who has a 50-27 record in six seasons as a head coach, went 27-13 in three seasons as the Central Michigan Chippewas HC, and then went to UC where he has compiled a 23-14 record in the last three years. He followed Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly at each of those stops. Jones will succeed previous UT HEC Derek Dooley, who was fired November 18 after going 15-21 in three years.

UC Athletic director Whit Babcock said this in a news release:

I would like to thank Butch Jones for his time at the University of Cincinnati. With that said, we are excited about the future of this program and this job will be extremely attractive nationally. Our search will begin immediately.

Peyton Manning and the streaking Denver Broncos may just be the hottest team in the AFC right now, and facing a down-and-out Raiders squad only reinforced that belief. Manning threw for 310 yards and had his 30th touchdown pass of his comeback-season after missing all of last year due to a neck injury, and the Broncos rolled to their eighth straight victory, 26-13 over the Oakland Raiders on Thursday night. Denver is now 10-3 on the year and it looks poised to claim one of the AFC’s top-2 seeds and earn a first-round bye in the NFL playoffs.
