The latest news on the NFL head-coaching carousel is the biggest to come out this week, as Chris Mortenson and Adam Schefter are reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly for the teams’ vacant HC job.

From @adamschefter & myself: Eagles interviewed Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. Sides will revisit when Kelly returns from out of country.

— Chris Mortensen (@mortreport) January 10, 2013

To repeat, Eagles and Kelly met after the BCS title game before he left for vacation out of country. @jayglazer also reporting interest.

In addition to the Eagles, league sources say the Bears also have interest in Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly …

— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) January 10, 2013

There is mutual interest on both sides, and the Eagles will reportedly have Kelly in for a second interview at some point after they originally interviews Kelly on Tuesday following the Fighting Irish loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the BCS national title game.

Kelly led Notre Dame to a 12-1 record and an appearance in the BCS National Championship game. The Fighting Irish became the first team to start the season unranked in the Associated Press poll and advance to the BCS National Championship game. He has a 199-68-2 overall record in his 22 seasons as head coach.

The season is over and now NFL rosters can be expanded from 53 to 90 players. The Bengals have signed TE/LS Bryce Davis, DE DeQuin Evans, WR Justin Hilton, T Dan Knapp, QB Zac Robinson, LB JK Schaffer to future contracts. All of them finished the season on the Bengals’ practice squad. Expect to hear news of a few more signings over the next few weeks, as well as the release of safety Robert Sands, who was recently arrested for domestic violence after finishing the year on the injured reserve list. The Bengals keep their roster full throughout the year, and have done well finding gems like Andrew Hawkins lately from doing such.

In addition to them, the Bengals signed WR Lavasier Tuinei to a reserve/future contract last week.

And to update the reports of head-coaching interviews for offensive coordinator Jay Gruden , the Philadelphia Eagles have been granted permission to talk to Gruden. He’s already scheduled to interview with the Arizona Cardinals at some point this week, and it’s looking more likely that he may leave, and the Bengals will be able to retain Mike Zimmer, which is what everyone wants anyway.

UPDATE:

ESPN is reporting that Doug Marrone has agreed to leave Syracuse and become the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Jan 3, 2013; Glendale, AZ, USA; Oregon Ducks coach Chip Kelly at press conference after the 2013 Fiesta Bowl against the Kansas State Wildcats at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Cleveland Browns are without a head coach still, and they may be waiting a bit longer after their #1 target appears to be passing them up. The team was scheduled to have a serious negotiating session tonight with Oregon head coach Chip Kelly after they previously interviewed him following the his Fiesta Bowl victory on Thursday night, but Kelly still hasn’t talked to the Browns tonight, as he’s been meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles, and now appears to be on the verge of becoming their next head coach.

If Kelly does come to NFL, he’ll undoubtedly look to incorporate his high-tempo spread offense that has made the Ducks one of the top rushing offenses in college football, as well as one of highest-scoring offenses, and with LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown, Jeremy Maclin, and a potential top-5 QB in the NFL Draft, the Eagles appear to be a more favorable situation for Kelly than the perennial losers that are the Cleveland Browns.

It now appears the Browns have their sights set on Syracuse Head Coach Doug Marrone.
