It’s been a tough offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as they’ve watched several key starters depart via free agency. They’ve already lost their leading receiver in Mike Wallace to the Miami Dolphins, and their third-leading receiver in tight end Heath Miller is coming off a torn ACL, and it’s unclear if he’ll be ready for the start of the 2013 season.

Well, their first big break has come, as they’ve opted to keep receiver Emmanuel Sanders:

Steelers have opted to match the $2.5M offer sheet the Pats extended to Emmanuel Sanders, keeping the WR

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had been lobbying coach Mike Tomlin to match the one-year, $2.5 million offer sheet that the Patriots, and that may have been hat finally pushed them to keep the fourth-year receiver out of SMU.

Last year, Sanders caught a career-high 44 passes, doubling his production from the previous season. He was also second on the team in punt returns (9 for 93 yards).

AFC Championship: Baltimore Ravens (10-6) at New England Patriots (12-4), 6:30 p.m. EST

The New England Patriots will have to try and win their fourth Super Bowl under head coach Bill Belichick in a 2012 AFC Championship rematch against the Baltimore Ravens, but they’ll be missing a significant piece this time around. The Pats averaged 35 points and 433 yards per game in 11 games with All-Pro TE Rob Gronkowski this season versus 34 points and 417 yards per in five games without him. Only once in the 42 previous seasons since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 has a conference championship matchup and site been the same in back-to-back years (Houston at Pittsburgh, 1978, 1979.)

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to advance to their first Super Bowl since 2001, Ray Lewis‘ fifth season in the NFL. It could be the last time we see Lewis on an NFL field after he announced he would retire this offseason, but after scoring a miracle win on Saturday vs. the Denver Broncos, he may be destined to ride out into the sunset as a champion.
