Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will have surgery to repair a tear of his right lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and at least part of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) , and noted doctor James Andrews will be the surgeon. Griffin’s return timetable has been set at 6-8 months, the normal recovery period for an ACL reconstruction. Griffin will undergo surgery early Wednesday morning. At Baylor, Griffin did bounce back from 2009 ACL surgery, so he knows what it takes to get back to the player he was prior to the injury.

Colts Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians is reportedly the San Diego Chargers’ top choice to replace Norval Turner.

The Buffalo Bills have hired Nathaniel Hackett as the teams’ offensive coordinator after he spent the past two years as new coach Doug Marrone’s offensive coordinator at Syracuse.

UPDATE 6:10

This is the latest report from the Washington post:

The MRI exam of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s right knee suggested that Griffin has suffered partial tears of his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, according to several people with knowledge of the test results.

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin is scheduled to be examined Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews to determine whether the test results show new or previous injuries.

UPDATE 4:05

There are reports coming from a Washington TV station that Robert Griffin III has torn his ACL and PCL, and will miss the next 14-18 months of football. The TV station has since removed the report, saying now that he will get more tests on his injured right knee after an MRI proved inconclusive.

There’s also this from CBS Sports’ Jason LaCanfora:

Judging from Shanahan’s remarks, RGIII injury situation can’t be good. 2nd opinions. Flying to Andrews. References to AP and RG3′s ’09 ACL

Jan 6, 2013; Landover, MD, USA; Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (10) reacts to an injury during the second half of the NFC Wild Card playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks at FedEx Field.

The Washington Redskins lost their playoff game yesterday, but may have suffered potentially bigger loos, as Robert Griffin III will undergo an MRI today to determine the severity of the knee injury he suffered during the teams’ 24-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The team does not believe he suffered any type of serious tear in the knee.

After being rejected by Oregon’s Chip Kelly, the Cleveland Browns will now set their sights on Colts OC Bruce Arians and Marc Trestman, the head coach of the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes.

Doug Marrone has agreed to leave Syracuse and become the next head coach of the Buffalo Bills. He will replace Chan Gailey, who was fired last Monday, a day after the Bills finished their second consecutive season with a 6-10 record. Marrone went 25-25 in four seasons atSyracuse. Don’t let his .500 record deceive you, as Syracusewas 26-57 over a seven-year period before Marrone took over.

Marrone also has plenty of NFL experience, as he spent 2006-08 as the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator and was the New York Jets’ offensive line coach from 2002-05.

Seahawks CB Richard Sherman has been informed he won his appeal and won’t be suspended for a positive test for a banned substance. Sherman and fellow starting CB Brandon Browner both tested positive for a banned substance, but Sherman appealed his result and argued that his sample cup had a broken seal, and thus was contaminated.

In a surprising bit of NBA news, the Brooklyn Nets have fired coach Avery Johnson. Johnson was the NBA coach of the month in November but now has been fired in December. As they’ve gone 5-10 in their last 15 games.

NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported late last night that he believes The Carolina Panthers will be making significant changes this offseason, and that head coach Ron Rivera will be fired on Monday. The Panthers have won four of their past five games and are 6-9 heading into Week 17 after finishing 2011 with a 6-10 record.

If the Panther do can Rivera, they’ll join the likes of the Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers, and Kansas City Chiefs as team almost certain to be looking for new coaches in 2012. The Eagles will reportedly make a heavy push to hire Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly to replace Andy Reid once the team fires him at the conclusion of the 2012 regular season. It’s untelling who the other NFL franchises are targeting as of now.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III was named to the NFC’s Pro Bowl roster on Wednesday, making him the first rookie quarterback to earn an outright invite since Dan Marino.

The Green Bay Packers will be looking to clinch a first-round by on Sunday vs. the Minnesota Vikings, but may have to do so without WR/KR Randall Cobb, who is is dealing with both knee and ankle ailments, and will be limited in Thursday’s practice after missing Wednesday’s practice. It’s looking as though he won’t play Sunday now that the Pack ghave a healthy Greg Jennings to help make up for his absence.
