The Word? Spread.

Here’s a report from someone who is not only embedded in enemy territory, but living in the city permanently (no joke)…

Steeler Nation is very concerned about Pittsburgh’s pass defense – and for good reason. Starting safety Troy Polamalu is still recovering from a knee injury and will miss Sunday’s game. Backup Tyrone Carter is not 100-percent and there’s an inexperienced player behind him, Ryan Mundy. As some of the experts noted on Bengals.com, the Steelers are limping into Paul Brown Stadium and for once the Bengals have some distinct advantages. Now is the time to exploit them.

Cincinnati needs to spread the field as much as possible Sunday. I want to see four wide receivers frequently. Force Pittsburgh to cover our receivers one-on-one and put some of those backups on the field. If Chicago and rookie Johnny Knox can have success against Pittsburgh – and they had plenty of it last week – how well can Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco, Laveranues Coles, Chris Henry and Andre Caldwell do?

The opportunity is right there. If Cincinnati spreads the field and Palmer can get rid of the football quickly – and avoid getting killed or fallen on by fat Steelers in the process – the Bengals might be able to pull an upset. But If Marvin Lewis and Bob Bratkowski revert to Woody Hayes football, trying to outmuscle the Steelers with repeated running plays, I’m going to vomit. Multiple times.

The advantages are obvious. Throw the ball Cincy. Spread is the word.

Who Dey.
