First or Bust

As usual, Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer is the X-Factor here. Coach Zimmer has worked with over four-fifths of the current roster before, to include recently signed Jamaal Anderson as a rookie in Atlanta before being a Bengal. Unlike last year, with a training camp and pre-season to build on, there really is no telling what this defensive set of players will be able to do. Last year the Bengals were 7th in the NFL in Total Defense; 5th in sacks, 9th against the pass and 10th against the run.

On the flip-side, the Bengals were also 26th in interceptions. Ironically, the Patriots and Packers who were 31st and 32nd in the NFL in Total Defense were also 1st and 2nd in interceptions with the 49ers as a close 3rd. This may be the magic stat to watch for next season or maybe as early as April 26th. A fifth 1st round defensive back on the squad could only work to bolster the team’s interception numbers.
