The writers at Football Outsiders are conducting a study on broken tackles in the NFL and have now ranked al NFL teams based on their ability to tackle consistently without having broken tackles occur. The Cincinnati Bengals ranked 13th based on their 5.1% of plays they had with a broken tackle. Out of 993 possible play, they had only 51 broken tackles the entire 2011 season, which was tied for 11th. Its worth noting that the best team for not having broken tackles was the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants at just a 3.8% broken tackle rate.
While the Bengals finished in the top tier in this stat, they certainly can improve on that stat. Overall, bad tackling is something that DC Mike Zimmer doesn’t tolerate and this statistic speaks to that.
