Bengals 2012 Positional Pros and Cons: Defense

2 of 6

Defensive End:

Pros: This position is full of players who have seen a good number of snaps in the NFL. They are experienced players who have had some good years. Carlos Dunlap, one of the biggest pass rushing threats, should be healthy this season and has the capability to be the team’s sack leader. Also returning is Robert Geathers who is always solid on the line and can help support the run. Michael Johnson is still learning his technique as a down lineman and hopefully will take a step forward this year and be able to use his large frame to contribute on the line. New additions of former first round draft picks, Jamaal Anderson and Derrick Harvey will help solidify a nice rotation at the defensive end position.

Cons: Two key players were lost in free agency this past offseason in Frostee Rucker and Jonathan Fanene. Both of these players were solid contributors last season and it is uncertain if their replacements will be able to fill their shoes. A huge question lingers: Can Carlos Dunlap stay healthy? He has not proven that he can since joining the NFL. Will Michael Johnson finally improve his technique enough to contribute on the line? He has had plenty of time to work this out, and it still seems like he is having trouble grasping the concepts.
