Morning Headlines: Dez Bryant Arrested, and Reds lose Joey Votto

In the midst of a 6-game winning streak and coming off a weekend sweep of the defending world champions and hated rival St. Louis Cardinals, the Cincinnati Reds were riding as high as any team in baseball. Then came news that first baseman Joey Votto will have surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee, leaving the NL Central leaders without their best hitter for the next three to four weeks. It didn’t help that they dropped a 5-3 decision to the Arizona Diamondbacks last night after their bats went cold and they failed to score any runs after the 2nd inning.

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence in De Soto,Texas. Bryant was arrested Monday and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence stemming from a Saturday incident. He’s technically a repeat offender, as last year he faced two lawsuits that sought in excess of $800,000 in unpaid bills, so it will be interesting to see how NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell handles him.

The biggest winner of yesterday’s deadline to reach a long-term deal was Bears RB Matt Forte. The Bears and their Pro Bowl RB agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth $32 million. Forte will also receive over $18 million in guarantees.

Someone who wasn’t as fortunate enough to get a long-term deal done was WR Dwayne Boye, and now it would be a surprise to see Bowe back in Kansas City after this upcoming season.

Santonio Holmes doesn’t think a two-quarterback system can work in the NFL, let alone in New York with Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

Suspended Saints LB Jonathan Vilma filed a motion Monday to expedite his requested temporary restraining order against the NFL.
