In a week 1 divisional game between the Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was Bucs who escaped with a 16-10 victory. Tampa Bay dominated the run game, outrushing the Panthers 130-10, and held onto the ball for nearly 15 whole minutes more than the Panthers. Still, trailing 16-10 with 2:@2 left in the 4th-quarter, the Panther had a chance to get a stop and the ball back for a game-winning drive, but Josh Freeman hit Vincent Jackson on a 3rd-and-2 pass for a first-down and the Bucs ran out the clock. Freeman finished the day 16/24 for 138 yards and a touchdown, while rookie RB Doug Martin rushed 24 times for 95 yards and added 4 receptions for 23 yards. Cam Newton finished 22/38 for 303 yards with 1 TD, but threw 2 costly INTs.

The Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals went back-and-forth throughout the contest, with both teams having go-ahead scoring drives in the 4th-quarter

Kevin Kolb came off the bench in the 4th in relief of John Skelton, who left with an ankle injury, and led the Cardinals on an 80-yard drive capped off by a TD pass to WR Andre Roberts to take a 20-16 lead. Rookie Seahawks QB Russell Wilson tried to answer, leading the Hawks on a drive all the way down to the Arizona 4-yard line, but Wilson’s 4th-down pass to Braylon Edwards fell incomplete, and the Cardinals held on for the win. Kolb finished his lone drive 6/8 for 66 yards and the game-winning TD, while rookie Russell Wilson went 18/34 for 153 yrads with a TD and 1 INT, but came up just short of his first career NFL victory.

What an opening day of NFL football.
