Defensive end Michael Johnson, the Bengals’ designated franchise player, was once again sitting out of practice today after missing Monday’s practice with an unknown injury. It’s unclear if this is some kind of planned rest period, or if he does have some kind of injury the coaches aren’t ready to reveal yet. It could also be the coaches giving him rest because they know what hey have in Johnson, and want to give some of the younger DEs a chance to showcase their abilities.
As of now, Johnson has little hope of resigning with the Bengals next year after they gave Carlos Dunlap a 5-year, $40 million deal, and are likely about to give DT Geno Atkins a deal worth more than what the rest of the d-line combined will be making in the coming years.
LB Vinnie Rey (PCL injury), LB Emmanuel Lamur (hamstring), rookie OT Reid Fragel (knee), CB Brandon Ghee (head/shoulder) and TE Alex Smith (knee) also returned to practice for the first time since the preseason opener vs. the Atlanta Falcons.
