In the first drive by each team, the defenses stepped up, making the game an early battle of field position. However, from deep in their own territory, third-string quarterback Hoyer, who is making his first start at home for Cleveland, led the Browns down-field methodically on their second drive of the game.
The dive was marked by two big pass plays, including an effective quick screen for 39 yards, to Davone Bess. The drive ultimately culminated in a touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron.
Playing for his childhood team, Hoyer started the game by posting an 8-for-8 mark, and throwing for 80 yards in the firsts quarter.
The Bengals are having trouble early with the running game, as the Law Firm was repeatedly stuffed near the line. Following a short kick and a nice catch and run by Giovani Bernard, the Bengals found themselves at the Cleveland 40 yard line. Despite this, the first quarter ended with a 3rd and thirteen.
