Fantasy Football: Injury News and Need-to-Know Info

1 of 7

For most fantasy football leagues, Week 16 saw their championship played, but some have theirs in Week 17, which makes for some interesting plays and more strategizing to do.

Many teams are resting their key players in Week 17 in hopes of making a deep-run in the NFL playoffs, so that means normal backups may become starters this week, while typical studs are rested and force owners to scramble on the waiver wire to find an adequate replacement.

First off, here are the players dealing with injuries and their latest status as to whether they’ll play this week:

*The Minnesota Vikings don’t have anything to play for in Week 17, and Head Coach Leslie Frazier announced on Friday afternoon that RB Matt Asiata will start the season finale against the Lions. Adrian Peterson is doubtful to play because of injuries to both his groin and foot.

Frazier said that Peterson would be out there if the team felt he was ready, but the safe money is on Peterson having played his final snap for the 2013 season. It’s the last home game at the Metrodome and that’s one Peterson doesn’t want to miss.

*The Green Bay Packers will likely have QB Aaron Rodgers, WR Randall Cobb and RB Eddie Lacy this Sunday vs. the Chicago Bears.

*The Dallas Cowboys will not have QB Tony Romo this week due to back surgery. That makes the Cowboys offense significantly weaker, and only WR Dez Bryant, TE Jason Witten and RB DeMarco Murray are worthy plays this week.

*Cowboys WR Dez Bryant might be dealing with a back issue, but he says that won’t keep him from playing on Sunday against the Eagles and says there’s ‘No doubt I’ll be playing Sunday‘.

*There are rumors that Lions WR Cavlin Johnson has been playingwith a sprained PCL. He missed Friday’s practice and with the team having nothing to play for in Week 17, Megatron may be inactive Sunday, so monitor his status leading up to the inactives list being released. If he’s active, her’s a must-start vs. a putrid Vikings defense.

*Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe was a non-participant in practice on Thursday after being diagnosed with a concussion. The Chiefs are already likely to rest their starters, so don’t expect to see Bowe playing this week vs. the San Diego Chargers.

*The Cincinnati Bengals may be without TEs Jermaine Gresham and Tyler Eifert this week, meaning WR Marvin Jones gets a nice fantasy boost.

*Despite being listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew was able to play last week, is expected to play in Week 17 vs. the Indianapolis Colts. That significantly devalues Jordan Todman and makes him a must-drop this week.

*The Carolina Panthers will likely be without WR Steve Smith vs,. the Atlanta Falcons this week due to a sprained PCl, which actually boosts the value of WR Brandon LaFell and TE Greg Olson. All other Panthers outside of QB Cam Newton and RB DeAngelo Williams should remain on the bench/waiver wire.
