The Minnesota Vikings don’t have anything to play for in Week 17, and the team announced today that Adrian Peterson will sit out Sunday’s season finale against the Detroit Lions. He had previously been listed as doubtful with a groin injury.

Head Coach Leslie Frazier announced on Friday that running back Matt Asiata will start the season finale against the Detroit Lions. Peterson is doubtful to play because of injuries to both his groin and foot, and Toby Gerhart has already been ruled out with a hamstring injury.

It would be be Asiata’s second career start and second in three games. With Gerhart and Peterson out two weeks ago against the Eagles, Asiata carried the ball 30 times for 51 yards and three touchdowns in a 48-30 win.

This is a sad way to see Peterson’s season end, and he’ll finish the year with 1,266 rushing yards after gaining 2,097 yards last year.
