The Cincinnati Bengals hope they can keep defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer for at least one more year, but everyone knows he’s more deserving to be an NFL head coach than most candidates, including Jay Gruden, who was just named the Washington Redskins head coach.
Year after year, he continues to watch younger, hot-shot coordinators like Gruden get jobs while Zimmer is left to wonder why he’s not getting that chance.
Former Bengals defensive lineman John Thornton played briefly under Zimmer, and he’s ready to see him get that elusive head-coaching job. It may happen with the Tennessee Titans, who are scheduled to interview Zimmer today:
"“I think he is ready,’’ said Thornton of Zimmer. “The thing that people said about him is that he is too tough, but I don’t think that is the case. Players respond to tough coaches, and players sometimes want that. The guys respond to him.”"
There’s already been one report today that the Zimmer is the favorite to land the Minnesota Vikings job.
