Now that the Cincinnati Bengals have lost Mike Zimmer, a new era begins with Paul Guenther now becoming the defensive coordinator of a unit that’s routinely ranked in the top-10 over the past six years.
Needless to say, many Bengals players were sad and joyful to see Zimmer finally become a head coach after he’d worked so hard for so many years to become one.
Bittersweet best describes how safety George Iloka and many of the Bengals feel right now:
Bitter sweet, bitter sweet....

Today is one of the happiest and yet saddest days for me. Happy Coach Zimm finally gets to be a head coach and spread all of his knowledge.

Zimmer is very similar to Parcells and will challenge everyone to be the best they can be. I love that guy and he will always be with me.

Congrats to Coach Zimmer on his HC position. Great man and a great defensive mind. Good to see him get the opportunity to lead a team.

Bengals fans would love to see Zimmer back on Hard Knocks this year with the Vikings:
Vikings just got my vote for Hard Knocks this year

Oh, and in case you were interested in Mike Zimmer matching-up with his former college and current Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden:
Gruden's Redskins play at Zimmer's Vikings in 2014. That would make for an interesting early-season primetime game.

Congratulations are certainly in order for Zimmer, but so too for Guenther, who becomes a DC at the NFL level for the first time, and he was introduced today to the media:

The Bengals were certainly lucky to keep Guenther after he had offers to go with Mike Zimmer to Minnesota:
Guenther: "Really at the end of the day it comes down to the players and that's the message I'm going to give to them. It's up to you guys."

Guenther said he had opportunities w/ Redskins, Vikings, one other team. Decided to stay bc of family, loyalty and the players. #Bengals

Guenther on if he's talked to Zimmer: "We've talked briefly. He's kind of mad at me right now, so you've got to understand that." #Bengals
