Interior Linemen
Prior to UDFA Trey Hopkins’ injury (which looks to be serious as he was spotted in a cast on Tuesday), I believed the offensive line was set with nine players. Since his injury, I now assume the line has a spot open. This spot will be fought for by veteran G/T Will Svitek, center T.J. Johnson, and veteran center Trevor Robinson, though it should be noted that Hopkins may be a candidate for the I.R. with a designation to return tag if he isn’t ruled out for the year, so this may be a temporary opening. In the meantime, one of these linemen has the sudden opportunity to make the roster.
Center T.J. Johnson has received the most snaps during this preseason, amongst these three, but was carted off the field during the game against the Cardinals. Going forward, his status is questionable and so his best shot at employment may be a spot on the practice squad again this year or going on I.R. for the year. Will Svitek is a veteran lineman who has played at several spots in his career. He was brought onto the roster in June, but has made little impression thus far. The most likely option to fill the hole is veteran center Trevor Robinson. Robinson received a starting opportunity with the Bengals when he filled in for former center Kyle Cook. Robinson played well during Cook’s absence, but was unable to retain the position despite and Cook’s underwhelming performance. But unless something drastic happens, or if the Bengals choose to only carry eight linemen (highly unlikely due to health concerns), the spot looks to be Robinson’s going forward.
