The Cincinnati Bengals were hopeful to get something done in the last seven days of March, but it seems that Mike Zimmer has finally one a free agent signing over the Bengals. It was announced the Taylor Mays was signed by the Vikings earlier today according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson via her Twitter account.
Taylor Mays spent the past four seasons with the Bengals and appeared in all 16 games last season. Despite not starting once in 2014, he recorded a sack and a safety (against the Jaguars). His best season was in 2012, recording 22 combined tackles. His 2013 campaign was cut short after he suffered a dislocated shoulder half way through the season; he was promptly placed on the injured reserve list.
The Vikings need help within their run defense, but ranked in the top ten for pass defense. If Mays remains a free safety for the Vikings, he would most likely be penciled in as Harrison Smith‘s backup and be a significant contributor on special teams.
Mays is very familiar with the defensive play calling, as he played three years under Mike Zimmer when he was the defensive coordinator of the Bengals.
We wish Taylor Mays best of luck next season and thank him for his time in stripes.
