The Bengals’ defense is primed to make another stand. Last year, the unit finished as second best in the league. Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther and head coach Marvin Lewis have built a monster. The tinkering didn’t stop, with last year’s success. Bengals brass went out and secured more parts for their burgeoning Frankenstein creation. Karlos Dansby, William Jackson, and Andrew Billings are just a few of the names that will be popping eardrums in 2016.
"Since MARVIN LEWIS has entered the picture, DEFENSE has surged to the FOREFRONT, in the Bengals BLUEPRINT for SUCCESS."
There has definitely been a premium set on defensive backs and linebackers. Nick Vigil will be showing Bengals faithful what he’s capable of doing. He’s been impressive, since putting on the stripes. His speed and smarts have captured the attention of Vontaze Burfict. The two did a lot of kidding around, during OTAs. But, Vigil has the utmost respect for Tez.
“He’s an extremely smart player. He’s always in the right spot,” Vigil said, praising Burfict. “He knows what the offense is trying to do. He’s one of the smartest players I’ve ever been around. People say I’m a smart player, but I’m not there yet. I’m still trying to learn the defense. I’m out there thinking a little bit.”
That should be the key to the Bengals’ defense returning to top-tier form. The ability to flow with the plays through a thorough understanding of the system.
If the Bengals D looked beastly last season, this will be the year it gets unleashed.
