NFL Discipline

NFL discipline policy has become as hazy as the catch rule. Predicting it is nearly impossible. But, based on their code of conduct, one would expect action against Jones to be coming. The NFL book on policy not only condemns players convicted of committing crimes but those charged with them, as they disservice the NFL that they must represent with their actions on and off the field.

Jones had previously been suspended the entirety of the 2007 season after violations of the personal conduct policy. The cornerback had been in multiple altercations at that point, and commissioner Roger Goodell responded harshly.

“Your conduct has brought embarrassment and ridicule upon yourself, your club, and the NFL”

“Your conduct has brought embarrassment and ridicule upon yourself, your club, and the NFL, and has damaged the reputation of players throughout the league,” Goodell said in a letter. “You have put in jeopardy an otherwise promising NFL career, and have risked both your own safety and the safety of others through your off-field actions.”

If the past is any indication and Jones were found guilty, he might be suspended multiple games of the 2017 season. No number of games would be truly out of the question for the NFL, as consequences of conduct policy violation are unclear. But, any number of games wouldn’t be good for the Bengals.
