Effect On The Bengals

Without knowing what (if any) punishment Jones will be handed down from the league, it’s difficult to know the extent to which this will do a number on Cincinnati.

In the absolute worse case scenario, Jones incurs a lengthy suspension, and as one of the older players in the league, he never finds his way back onto the field, and the Bengals must cut him. Jones’ contract is laid out poorly for Cincinnati. The Bengals would take a roughly six million dollar cap hit and lose just over a million in dead money. Most of Jones’ bonuses were allocated for his first season on the deal, and his base salary gets higher with time.

On top of that financial burden, the Bengals will already be tasked with re-signing cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick for the season. He likely won’t be cheap, and while the franchise tag seems easy, the already tackle-barren Bengals would probably have to let Andrew Whitworth walk.

Hopefully, the current situation won’t come to this. His record has been clean for almost five years now, so there’s some reason to believe it might not end up as bad as originally thought. But if it does, he may have put the Bengals in their worst position in years.
