Jake Elliott

I won’t beat around the bush; the kicking situation last year was frustrating.  Mike Nugent was a decent kicker at best considering he missed one field goal from the 30-39 range, two in the 40-49 range, and all three attempts from 50+.  The more frustrating aspect of his game was his PAT’s, of which he missed a whopping six– tied for worst in the NFL.  If Nugent hits one PAT or his lone field goal attempt in the Washington game the Bengals walk out with a win.

Enter former Memphis kicker Jake Elliott, who hit exactly 100% of all of his PAT attempts across four seasons for the Tigers.  In his senior season, Elliott was 12-15 from 40+ yards including two from 50+.  While Randy Bullock is still on the roster, I don’t believe the Bengals would draft a kicker in the 5th round if they didn’t want to see some improvement from what they already had.  At the very least, expect to throw fewer remotes and beers this season because of missed PAT’s.

So, there you have it.  You will hear some members of the national media telling you how awful the Bengals are going to be. Whether their reasons are valid or they just love to hate on a team that often can’t get out of their own way, you can come back to this article and feel hopeful that maybe the sky isn’t falling.  Just maybe, things will be alright this season.

You can reach for that spoonful of salt now.
