Joe Burrow is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals this spring. Will he be the quarterback who can win the team a playoff game?
The Cincinnati Bengals will have the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. After going 2-14, they are expected to take LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow with that top selection. The Athens, Ohio native dominated in the SEC during his senior season in Baton Rouge. Will he be the first Bengals quarterback to win the franchise a playoff game since 1990?
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Josh Hill and Mark Carman, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, assess if Burrow is the guy who can end the Bengals’ league-worst playoff losing streak (27:15).
Schwartz believes Burrow will win a playoff game in his career because a lot of quarterbacks who aren’t as talented as him have won playoff games. He said Tim Tebow won a playoff game with the Denver Broncos and said guys like Jimmy Garoppolo and Ryan Tannehill won multiple playoff games this year as essentially game managers in a run-oriented offense.
Hill was a bit more conclusive in his assessment of Burrow. He said not only will Burrow win a playoff game in his NFL career, but he will do it as a Bengal and he will do it on his rookie deal, coming in his first five seasons. The guy has played in so many big games in his two years at LSU that it would be shocking to not see him end the streak in Cincinnati for the Bengals.
If the Bengals do end up drafting Burrow, will he win them at least one playoff game? You would be a fool to think otherwise. He is so cool under pressure and was the most accurate passer in college football history. Of course, he’ll need more talent around him to help get to the postseason, but once he’s there, it’s game on.
Burrow may not end up having the best NFL career of any quarterback taken in the NFL Draft. However, the Bengals have to take him No. 1 overall. He just had the greatest single-season a quarterback has ever had in college football. He’s from Southeastern Ohio and the Bengals need a quarterback. Burrow may not be a perennial Pro Bowler, but he’ll win the Bengals a playoff game.
