This trade is the safest route for the Cincinnati Bengals.

On the surface, it may seem unnecessary for the team to acquire another defensive end in John Simon. Carlos Dunlap and Sam Hubbard lock down the starting spots extremely well, while Carl Lawson comes in and generates pass rush at an incredible rate.

Still, teams can always use more players along the defensive line to get after the quarterback. Adding Simon gives Cincinnati four high quality, high motor guys at one of the most important positions. It will allow defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to add diversity to the looks he presents upfront, causing him to hit home more often. That extra pressure could get the defense humming, masking deficiencies in other areas and creating many more turnovers.

In addition, they’ll grab a 6th round pick to either find a diamond in the rough or pick up a quality special team player.

From the Patriots perspective, Simon will be difficult to lose. Still, rookie Chase Winovich played great last season in his respective role. This will pave the way for him to seize the starting spot and build on his first year, which included 7 sacks. Overall, moving on from former Buckeye John Simon would be worth acquiring Dalton for them.
