The 2020 NFL Combine was everything it needed to be for Joe Burrow, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the fans in the Queen City.

The 2020 NFL Combine was a pedestrian affair for Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow. After a press conference on Tuesday where he settled a jittery fanbase, stroked the local Cincinnati media, and met with a few teams, including the Bengals, the LSU standout can cross February off the list of to-do.

Burrow didn’t throw and he didn’t run. As a matter of fact, the only news deemed ‘noteworthy’ would be related to hand size, and the joke he made on social media. Bottom line, it was a drive-thru in Indianapolis, and the Bengals fanbase is able to take a deep breath, and wait on the Opening Night of the 2020 NFL Draft in Las Vegas.

NFL Network was quick to begin heaping the praise. For fans who want to revel in that, please, by all means. But to make the leap and compare Burrow to New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady? Maybe pump the brakes a bit, and remember the heads exploding when Colin Cowherd compared Burrow to Tony Romo. The comparison is premature as he’s neither taken a snap nor thrown a pass in an NFL regular-season game.

That said, Bengals fans should be ecstatic about the prospects of Burrow in Cincinnati. While the “one-hit wonder” narrative will still have some legs to it until he is finally on the field, the praise he’s receiving looks to be both sincere and reasonable.

It’s also promising for the organization. As the likely transition from veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton to the rookie Burrow will begin in the immediate future, the need for Cincinnati to get this draft absolutely correct is palpable. If they draft accordingly, figure out a fix for A.J. Green, and get healthy on the offensive line, the Bengals could be in for a quantum leap forward.

dark. Next. Dalton, Brady dominate QB talk at the NFL Combine

For fans, the NFL Combine won’t be remembered for a 40 time, or how well the ball was spun. All that matters is both Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals are on the same page. That in and of itself is a quantum leap forward.
