4 Small School Prospects the Cincinnati Bengals Could Target in the Draft
By Kyle Smith
Tyler Bass – Kicker, Georgia State
Yes, he’s a kicker, but Tyler Bass has a pure gun for a leg and a pretty accurate one at that. During his senior season at Georgia State, Bass knocked in 93% of his field goals between 35 and 50 yards. On kickoffs, he only allowed nine returns all season long.
While at the Senior Bowl, Bass impressed both coaches and scouts alike as he boomed kicks to the back of the endzone. During indoor practices in Mobile, he even hit the ceilings during kickoffs. In the game, he went 4/4 on extra-point attempts and hit field goals of 41 and 50 yards during the game.
Randy Bullock, the Bengals kicker, did have a career year last season, but he left something to be desired. Bullock did miss only one extra point attempt, but he hit only 87.1% of his field-goal attempts. On 71 kickoff attempts, he allowed 19 returns.
The Bengals could use a more reliable upgrade for Randy Bullock. They whiffed by releasing Jake Elliott after selecting him in the fifth round in 2017. Elliott now has the Eagles’ franchise record after nailing a 61-yard attempt to win a game in 2019. Selecting Tyler Bass could make amends for Cincinnati’s mistakes and he could be available late in the draft to round out the Bengals’ 2020 rookie class.
