Derreck Tuszka is a small school prospect, reigning from North Dakota State. Against inferior competition, he put up absolutely insane numbers. In his senior year alone, he posted 13.5 sacks, where his great hand usage was on full display.
In addition, he pieced together an outstanding combine, showing off impressive athleticism, and even recorded a 3 cone time that put him in the 97th percentile for his position.
The fact that he played against lesser competition is obviously what gives him a chance to be had in the 7th round. Some scouts knock him for his lack of length and explosion as well.
Still, analysts love him for his effort and motor, something that should fit in nicely to Zac Taylor’s culture. Special team’s coordinator Darrin Simmons would undoubtedly love to have a guy like Tuszka at his disposal as well.
The eye-popping production will assuredly come down to earth once he enters the NFL. However, with a little time to adjust, he could come into his own. The expectation should be for Tuszka to contribute heavily in the third phase and eventually be able to rotate in to give the Bengals some high energy plays, which is exactly what teams want from a 7th-rounder.
