The Cincinnati Bengals are one step closer to winning the Penei Sewell sweepstakes after losing to the New York Giants in week 12.

Final. 19. 31. 17. 56

The Cincinnati Bengals fell to the New York Giants in week 12, dropping their record on the season to 2-8-1. Without stellar quarterback Joe Burrow under center, the offense wasn’t able to get much of anything generated.

A 103-yard kickoff returned for a touchdown by Brandon Wilson kept things interesting early, but a Brandon Allen led offense wasn’t able to net enough points to come away with the victory. On the bright side, rookie wideout Tee Higgins secured a touchdown late, continuing his impressive campaign.

Moving forward, head coach Zac Taylor must find a path to generating more offense. Since Burrow went down to injury, the club is only averaging roughly two yards per play, an embarrassing statistic.

Bengals hold onto the third overall selection, for now

Although Cincinnati suffered defeat this week, they secured a victory in the long-term. With their loss to the Giants, they hold onto the third overall pick. Signal-callers Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields widely expected to go first and second overall, which would put the organization in a position to draft offensive tackle Penei Sewell, widely regarded as the best non-quarterback prospect in the upcoming class.

It’s no secret the Bengals need reinforcements along the offensive trenches, as the football world saw Burrow take far too many hits to begin his NFL foray. Sewell would certainly help Cincinnati shore up that aspect of the roster as one of the most exciting prospects the position has seen in recent history.

There’s still a long way to go before late April rolls around, but things are trending in a direction that will see the Bengals secure a top-three pick. This season hasn’t been what many fans were hoping for, but at least the orange and black faithful can rest easy knowing a premier talent will be added to the franchise.

As the Bengals come to terms with yet another close loss, they’ll gear up for a matchup against the Miami Dolphins.
