Bengals free-agent targets: Guard Brandon Scherff

If the Bengals are unable to get Joe Thuney to put pen to paper, their very next call should be to current Washington Football Team guard Brandon Scherff. The former fifth overall pick is considered to be in the same tier of players as Thuney and his play on the field certainly backs that assessment up.

Scherff has earned an even better grade from Pro Football Focus than Thuney, coming in at an outstanding 82.5. For comparison’s sake, that would put him a full 10 points higher than the best offensive lineman on Cincinnati’s squad.

He’s committed just two penalties this season and given up only a single sack. That’s more than can be said for any player that has started for the Bengals.

Flip on his game tape, and it’s easy to fall in love with the mean streak he brings and how he finishes his blocks in the run game. Those are aspects that have been lacking for the Bengals and an injection of intensity from Scherff could work wonders.

Spotrac has his market value similar to Thuney’s projecting him to be worth $13.1M per season. Again, that’s a number Cincinnati can and should be willing to match.
