Bengals to build around: Tyler Boyd

It should come as a surprise to no one that Tyler Boyd is on this list. He has led the Bengals in receiving yards for the past two years and is currently set to do so again in 2020. While Tee Higgins is rapidly catching up to him, Boyd is currently the best receiver on the Bengals’ roster.

With a young franchise quarterback in Joe Burrow, it is important to surround him with solid weapons. Look at some of the best young quarterbacks in the league: Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, and Baker Mayfield are all surrounded by high-end weapons and benefit greatly from it.

In the past three years, Boyd has had to deal with backup quarterbacks Jeff Driskel, Ryan Finley, and Brandon Allen when his starting quarterback was unavailable for one reason or another. In those games, Boyd has continued to make plays.

This was shown on Sunday when the Bengals faced the Miami Dolphins. Boyd took a short pass from Allen the length of the field for a 72-yard touchdown.

Despite this being Boyd’s only reception of the game before he was ejected, it accounted for nearly half of Allen’s passing yards for the entire game. In doing this, Boyd showed that he could make plays even when the offense around him is in shambles.

Additionally, there is a strong case to be made for Boyd being the best slot receiver in the NFL. He currently leads the league in receptions from the slot and has proved over the past three years that he is a major threat there.

Overall, Boyd is one of the best receivers in the league, despite being underrated nationally. In order to continue Burrow’s development, his presence in the Bengals’ offense will be crucial.
