Bengals to build around: Jonah Williams

The offensive line has been one of the Bengals’ biggest weaknesses for the past few years. This problem finally came back to bite the team with Joe Burrow’s injury in November. However, it has not all been bad. Former first-round pick Jonah Williams has been impressive during his first season of NFL play.

According to Pro Football Focus, Williams had an overall grade of 70.1 before his injury against the Dolphins. In 634 snaps played, PFF only credits Williams for three sacks allowed. When considering that he is playing on one of the worst offensive lines in the league, the second-year tackle’s efforts are even more impressive.

An overhaul of the Bengals’ offensive line is likely on its way after how the 2020 season has unfolded. Williams may be the only player to survive that overhaul and stick around for the Burrow-era in Cincinnati.

It is looking more and more likely that the Bengals will be able to draft offensive tackle Penei Sewell in the 2021 NFL Draft. Between Williams and Sewell, the Bengals could have an elite duo of tackles once they have reached their full potential. That duo will be crucial for Burrow’s protection from pressure and could directly factor into his development over the next few years.
