Bengals who need to show something – No. 2: Samaje Perine

A backup who saw more playing time but ended up having one of the bigger mistakes of the game was running back Samaje Perine. Perine only had three carries that went for five yards but did have a fumbled that ended a promising drive when the majority of starters were still on the field. Perine will want to demonstrate a better ability to hold onto the ball and to find the rushing lanes against a stout Washington defense.

Perine will not see much playing time in the regular season unless an injury occurs again. With Joe Mixon cemented as the starting running back, Perine’s role is to help elevate the backups and to take care of the play when he does see the field.

While a fumble in the preseason is not the worst mistake, what you don’t want to see is that become some kind of trend. This game will be a nice opportunity to recover for Perine as he will likely see a similar number of snaps.

The Bengals would love Perine to have a good game, and with other running backs having excellent games against Tampa Bay, Perine will want to show that he is the clear number two running back on the roster.
