Bengals TE Drew Sample is ready to fill in for C.J. Uzomah in Super Bowl
Seeing C.J. Uzomah, the heart and soul of the Cincinnati Bengals, go down early in the AFC Championship game was hard to watch. It sucked because Uzomah has always believed that this team would get to this point and now he might not even be able to be a part of it.
If Uzomah isn’t healthy enough to play in the Super Bowl, which is a possibility, then it’ll be former second-round pick Drew Sample stepping up to the plate in the tight end role.
The Washington product has mostly disappointed since joining the team in 2019 and this year, in particular, hasn’t seen him do much. Sample is a good blocking tight end but he hasn’t been the playmaker the team was hoping he could be.
Drew Sample is ready to prove himself in the Super Bowl.
When speaking with the media on Saturday, Sample addressed that he might be tasked with filling Uzomah’s shoes and he’s ready to do so.
After Uzomah went down against the Chiefs, Sample and Mitchell Wilcox stepped into the tight end duties. Sample was on the field for 90% of the offensive snaps and finished the game with one reception for four yards. He was targeted twice.
Sample knows the Rams have a tremendous defense and he says that he and the rest of the Cincinnati offense is ready for the challenge of taking them on.
When it’s all said and done, Sample is happy to be in this spot. He’s thrilled to be in the Super Bowl with this group of guys and knows they can get the job done and be Super Bowl champions.
It hasn’t been the easiest road for Sample to this point but he has a big opportunity ahead of him if Uzomah can’t go on Sunday. All it takes is one play for Sample to become a Cincinnati Bengals legend.
